These are a thickening of the culture or epidermis which is of a conical shape. They are softened caused as a result of ill fitting shoes. Before any treatment soak your feet in a solution of hot water and baking soda, dry mustard, sea salt, Epsom salt or vinegar.

Onion Poultice: use the outer brown skin and a slice of onion, soak in apple cider vinegar with a slice of white bread. Allow it to steep for 24 hours. Apply a thick layer of the poultice on to the corns, Wrap a bandage around and leave overnight. Raw onion can be applied to corn, then cover with a plaster.

Oil: castor oil can help to soften the corn before removing, apply twice a day and cover with a bandaid. Rub corns with oil blend: 5 drops carrot oil, 5 drops tagets oil, mixed with 10 ml of olive oil and apply daily.

Papaya: see chapter on Papaya.

Lemon peel poultice, apply the soft side down to com, cover with a plaster and leave overnight.

Banana Skin: apply the inside of a banana skin to corns, bandage and leave over night.

Herbs: use the sap from calendula or greater celandine leaves and apply to the corns after the feet have been washed in hot salty water. The aloe-vera leaf is cut length wise and the gel side is placed over the com tightly, bandaged and left on overnight. The juice from fig leaves can also be used to treat corns.

Vinegar: breadcrumbs and apple cider vinegar made to a paste, apply each night until the com can be lifted out.

Raw garlic: applied to the corn and cover with a bandage every night for a week

Kombucha: soak in a warm kombucha foot bath for 15 minutes. Apply a kombucha poultice night and morning to soften and to dissolve the com.

Sunspots

Papaya: the latex or the fleshy side of the skin from a green fruit is applied to the spots. Papaya vinegar can also be applied.

Ulcers

Essential oils: cleanse the ulcer with an antibacterial wash of lavender, tea tree or palmarosa may also be used. Apply a cold poultice, radiating up to half an inch around the ulcer site. Poultice to be applied every two hours (one hour for the poultice to remain and second hour to rest from

treatment). This may continue for up to 24 hours. Decrease poultices daily upon signs of healing, Maintain poultices until area is completely healed.

Leg Ulcers

Bathe with dead water, then apply a compress with living water for about half an hour. Repeat compress applications every four hours. If infection re-occurs it will be necessary to bathe the wound every four hours for 10 minutes, let it dry and then apply a living water compress. Drink 200-300 ml of living water daily at night before retiring. It is necessary to apply a sterile dressing on the affected areas and remain lying down for most of the time during the treatment.

THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF THE SKIN

no comments

The skin is the largest organ of the body and performs many functions for health. It is a living, breathing, ever changing organ. It absorbs, repairs, regulates and protects. The skin is made up of three layers, the epidermis, the dermas and the subcutaneous tissue.

Epidermis – this is the outermost layer of the skin, it forms the protective covering of the skin of the body. It contains no blood vessels, but has many small nerve endings.

Dermas – this is the inner layer of the skin that is a highly sensitive and vascular layer of connective tissue. It contains numerous blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerves, sweat glands, oil glands, hair follicles, erector pili muscles and papillae.

Subcutaneous Tissue – is a layer of fatty tissue found below the dermas. This fatty tissue varies in thickness according to the age, sex and general health of the individual. It gives smoothness and contour to the body, contains fat for use as energy, and also acts as a protective cushion for the outer skin.

How is the skin nourished ?

The skin is nourished by the supply of blood and lymph. 0.5 to 0.66 of the total blood supply of the body is distributed to the skin. As the blood and lymph circulates through the skin it contributes essential materials for growth, nourishment and repair of the skin, hair and nails. Nerves of the skin – the skin contains the surface endings of many nerve fibres classified as:

Motor nerve fibres, which are distributed to the erector pili muscles that are attached to the hair follicles. >

Sensory nerve fibres, which react to heat, cold, touch, pressure and pain. Secretary nerve fibres, which are distributed to the sweat and oil glands of the skin.

PROBLEMS WITH PARASITES: LONG-DISTANCE SYMPTOMS?

no comments

The aspects of candidiasis discussed so far – the infection of specific parts of the body – is not in doubt. What is more contentious is the claim that Candida overgrowth in the gut can affect other parts of the body, where there is no actual infection. The belief that Candida can affect distant parts of the body -including the brain – is not based on hard scientific evidence. But some doctors report that such ‘distant’ symptoms clear up, along with the diarrhoea and bloating, when candidiasis in the gut is successfully treated. The type of symptoms commonly reported are fatigue, poor concentration, irritability, headaches, migraine, aching joints and muscles, hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), irregular heartbeat, sinusitis, urticaria, psoriasis, eczema and other skin conditions. It has also been suggested that candidiasis can cause asthma, although only very rarely.

How might symptoms like these be produced? One possibility is that the yeast is releasing toxins and other products that travel around the body in the blood. Some toxins have been identified, and one makes the blood vessels more leaky, which might account for the production of urticaria. But the main effect of the Candida toxins is to depress the immune system – while this may well be important in perpetuating the Candida infection, it would not account for the symptoms described above.

Rather than toxins, it may be the yeast’s waste product, acetaldehyde, that is causing problems. This is a small chemical molecule that the yeast produces when it ferments sugar – in the same way that brewer’s yeast produces alcohol. If enough acetaldehyde passed into the blood, it might alter the oxygen-carrying ability of the blood, and this could affect the amount of oxygen reaching the brain. At present, there is no evidence for this, however.

For toxins or acetaldehyde to produce multiple symptoms, quite large amounts would have to be produced. Whether the yeast could ever be as abundant as this is open to question. An alternative explanation is that the person becomes sensitized to chemicals produced by the Candida yeast, and therefore reacts to quite small amounts of them. Some patients with candidiasis give a positive skin-prick test to Candida antigens, showing that they have indeed developed an allergic reaction to them. This is unusual, however. Other patients give a negative skin-prick test but respond positively to an intradermal test, which is more ‘sensitive’ because it uses more antigen and places it in a deeper layer of the skin. Whether this actually demonstrates anything is debatable – we all have antibodies to Candida because we are exposed to it from birth, and a positive response to an intradermal test is seen in some healthy individuals. Even if there is an immune reaction to Candida antigens in a majority of patients, this would not explain all the symptoms attributed to candidiasis.

BODY SIGNAL ALERT PAIN AND SWELLING IN A SINGLE JOINT: DESCRIPTION AND POSSIBLE MEDICAL PROBLEMS

no comments

Gout is one of those diseases that sounds old-fashioned, like something your grandmother used to complain about to your grandfather: “Now, Harry, don’t eat that pastrami, or your gout will act up.” At least, that’s the way it used to go in my grandparents’ house.

Gout is actually a sign that the kidneys are not functioning well. The kidneys produce uric acid, which is normally excreted through your kidneys in your urine. If, however, for some reason your body produces more uric acid than your kidneys are able to process, it stays in the body. It typically gravitates toward the joints, collecting in the form of uric acid crystals. Collection sites commonly include the first joint of the big toe, but the crystals can also collect in the wrists, elbows, and knees, causing pain and swelling in these joints as well.

Gout is similar to rheumatoid arthritis, since it strikes with great unpredictability. After an initial experience of gout, you may not have to worry about it anymore, since some people have only one attack and that’s it. Others, however, will suffer from regular attacks. Unfortunately, the more frequent the attacks, the more likely the gout will spread to other joints.

Some people are genetically prone to gout, although drinking alcohol, taking antibiotics, or eating rich foods—as my grandfather did—is more often the cause since it can cause the body to produce more than the usual amount of uric acid.

BODY SIGNAL ALERT JOINTS, STIFFNESS AND PAIN IN: DESCRIPTION AND POSSIBLE MEDICAL PROBLEMS

no comments

As you get older, you’ve probably discovered that you just can’t do everything as easily and smoothly as you once could. While you used to bounce out of bed in the morning, it may take you longer to get up and about, and your joints may become stiff and painful as the day wears on; you may also sometimes feel as though you have sand in your joints because any movement can make them feel gritty.

These are all signs of osteoarthritis, a condition in which the cartilage that absorbs the shock of the bone begins to break down from years of use. Fingers, wrists, back, hips, and knees—every joint can be affected. The stiffness usually doesn’t appear when you first wake up but tends to increase as the day goes on. The joints can also become deformed, since fluid can accumulate in them; this can make them tender to the touch.

By the age of 45, osteoarthritis starts to appear, and by the age of 75, almost everyone shows some degree of osteoarthritis.

CHOLESTEROL LEVEL ABOVE 200: TREATMENT

no comments

In many cases, a low-fat diet and exercise program and significant weight reduction will reduce an elevated cholesterol level. If they don’t, medication may be prescribed. The problem is that you may feel you can return to your previous diet and sedentary lifestyle since you’re taking medication. Unfortunately, this will only increase your cholesterol levels as well as your need for higher doses of medication. Since most cholesterol-lowering medications have some side effects, your physician will need to monitor you closely by testing your liver function and vision. He may also order other diagnostic tests according to the type of medication prescribed. As always, both the doctor and the patient should consider both the benefits and the risks before considering any medication program.

In my opinion, the total cholesterol consumption for one day should not be mote than 200 milligram, an amount many fast-food meals easily exceed. The total diet should certainly not have more than 30% of its calories in fat. There are many excellent books on this topic that will help you learn how to decrease your intake of fat, including my own, Dr. Bruce Lowell’s Fat Percentage Finder (published by Perigee Books).

You should keep in mind that your cholesterol level should not be taken as a simple number by itself. You should ask your doctor about the components of your total cholesterol reading, since a high total cholesterol reading could mean high LDL and low HDL cholesterol levels, which is a healthy balance to strive for.

BLOOD PRESSURE TREATING AND SPECIAL MENTION FOR THE ELDERLY

no comments

Treating high blood pressure with medication presents a real challenge to physicians today. But many times, all that is necessary is to prescribe one or two types of medication that will bring the elevated blood pressure down to a normal level, combined with sensible diet and exercise and relaxation techniques. At other times, however, you will need to experiment with multiple drug regimens before you and your doctor arrive at the right combination of medication with the smallest number of side effects. You need to be patient, and don’t stop taking your medication without first discussing it with your doctor.

As long as we’re on the subject of medication for high blood pressure, remember to take your medications as prescribed whenever you visit your doctor for follow-up checkups, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. It’s also a good idea to order your prescriptions in small amounts at first. At the beginning of your treatment plan, you and your doctor will be experimenting with different medications to find the right one for you. This can be costly. Either ask your doctor to prescribe small amounts or ask your pharmacist to halve your prescription.

Special Mention for the Elderly

If you have an elderly relative who has high blood pressure and is also quite frail, it’s important to weigh the risks of taking the medication against the potential benefits. Lowering the blood pressure too drastically can cause further weakness, falls, and confusion and can ultimately be as harmful to her health as the high blood pressure. Ideally, the doctor, patient, and family should decide together about ways to control your loved one’s blood pressure without the side effects that may have a negative impact on the quality of her life.

WRIST, BUMP ON

no comments

Description and Possible Medical Problems

It seems that we’ve been trained from birth to regard any new lumps or bumps that appear on our bodies with a suspicious eye and a brain trained to think of the “C word”: cancer. Therefore, whenever a lump or bump turns out to be something else and is actually harmless, the relief is usually palpable.

This is the good news if you notice a lump or bump that appears on the back of your wrist, called a ganglion cyst. It’s usually painless and occurs when a gellike material escapes from a joint or a synovium, a tendon sheath in your wrist. It collects in one spot, causing the area to swell up, and may be either soft or hard.

Treatment

If you think you have a ganglion cyst, you should see your doctor. Though you’re probably reading your Body Signals correctly, the chance does exist that the growth is a tumor or a malignant growth. Your doctor will do an X ray and/or a sonogram to help determine the status of the growth. If, as in most cases, he does discover a ganglion cyst, he will drain it with a needle while applying pressure to it, to make sure none of the gel remains.
